The Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education: Reflections and Colloquy

Edited by Jack Greenberg and Kendall Thomas
with Lawyers for the Plaintiffs,
Jack Greenberg, Robert L. Carter, Oliver Hill, Constance Baker Motley, Jack B. Weinstein, President Bill Clinton, and
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

"The Legacy of Brown v. Board of Education is a valuable exploration of the most famous ruling of the United States Supreme Court in the twentieth century. It is also an historical landmark in its own right, offering to readers a glimpse, sometimes for the last time, of extraordinary attorneys who speak of their memories about and reflections upon the Brown litigation.
Randall Kennedy, Professor of Law, Harvard University School of Law

“ A delight. Reading the words of the speakers is the next best thing to being there. Former President Bill Clinton’s text was great, but what really caught my interest was the historian’s perspective as represented by Eric Foner and Alan Brinkley. A great read.”
—John Timoney, Miami Chief of Police and leading expert in the role of race and
Policing and author of Policing America: A Tale of Three Cities.

Fifty plus years after the Supreme Court decided Brown v. Board of Education, scholars, students, judges, social activists, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and President Bill Clinton gathered at Columbia Law School in a series of meetings to assess Brown's extraordinary impact. Contributors included lawyers who argued Brown, others who worked with them on the case, historians, and those who implement Brown in public schools today. These pages record the discussions, comments, and questions about the legacy of Brown, assessing its impact on education, criminal law, and the rights of women, Hispanics, and the gay/lesbian community. Justice Ginsburg and South Africa Chief Justice Arthur Chaskalson considered Brown's effect on international law and the law of other nations. President Clinton offered a remarkable, extemporaneous assessment of Brown's influence.
